Hypertension Medicine Effective for Breast Cancer

Blood pressure-lowering medicines known as beta blockers, according to research findings are also useful to help reduce the spread of breast cancer.

These medicines are believed to work to prevent stress hormones stimulate cancer cells. Beta-blocker medicines to compete with stress hormones and receptors bound to the same target. But unlike the stress hormones, beta blockers do not activate the cancer cells.

Powe and his friends from England and Germany to evaluate 466 cancer patients, a total of 92 patients have received medicines lowering blood pressure. 92 and 43 of these patients beta blocker uses the same time their breast cancer diagnosis.

Results showed that those who use beta blockers decreased the formation of cancer and decrease the formation of cancer returning in the same area. Compared with participants who use other types of hypertension medicines or participants who do not use blood pressure-lowering medicines, they were 71 percent lower risk of dying from breast cancer. In addition, users of beta blockers are also 57 percent lower risk of cancer returning.

Other scientist said the findings were interesting but still includes a preliminary study. The concept of controlling tumor growth by preventing stress or inflammatory response is not new.

For example, other studies have found that women with breast cancer who take aspirin (an anti-inflammatory) on a regular basis, decreased risk of recurrence of cancer returning.
