Origin of menstrual pain

The pain caused by painful menstruation or “dysmenorrhoea” are not trivial. Their intensity may vary from one woman to another. They can be quite “light” or extremely painful and even disabling. The symptoms are usually pain in lower back accompanied by headaches, pain in the abdomen, diarrhoea, nausea, etc.

In general, prostaglandins are faulty. Produced in excess during the menstrual period, they cause uterine contractions more intense. At this point, we speak of primary dysmenorrhoea. Among others, the pain is quite “natural.” Adolescents are most affected by this phenomenon.

In more severe cases, it is called secondary dysmenorrhoea. At this stage, the pain is persistent and unbearable. It is no longer only prostaglandins but other causes are taken into account. Medical examinations are required to determine what it really is: ovarian cyst, malformation of the uterus, infection, fibroids…
How to relieve the pain?

You should never take things lightly as painful periods can conceal a greater problem. Please consult your doctor if in doubt. Initially, the pain can be relieved by heat. Lying for a moment with a hot water bottle on your stomach can only do you good. You can also make use of antispasmodics, anti-inflammatory remedy.

The solutions ‘minor’ as heat, homeopathy, directed especially to women with primary dysmenorrhoea. In cases of secondary dysmenorrhoea, only your doctor will be able to offer an adequate solution, drug or not. Women with this syndrome are often prone to psychological distress or depression. A medical consultation is essential.

The sport is advocated as a preventive. Indeed, lack of exercise or being overweight is risk factors. Prevention also involves food. Do not abuse the refined sugars and fatty substances too. Similarly, limit your consumption of red meat. Emphasize consumption of oily fish and foods rich in omega-3: oil and flax seed or hemp oil, rapeseed…
